Violinist, Educator, and Scholar

 

Jordan Johnson is a professional performing violinist, dedicated educator, and aspiring D.M.A. scholar currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance at the University of Texas at San Antonio under the mentorship of Dr. Nicole Cherry. Holding a Bachelor of Music from the University of Maryland, College Park, Jordan built a dynamic performing career across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area—performing in landmark venues like the Kennedy Center and collaborating with ensembles such as the Naptown Philharmonic Orchestra and Live Arts Maryland—while maintaining a robust commitment to pedagogy and academic research.

 

Pedagogy and Community Leadership

As an educator, Jordan brought extensive experience to his work, having taught private violin and viola students of all levels. He previously served as a Suzuki-inspired strings teacher at The Norwood School, where he adapted instruction to support neurodiverse learners with ADHD and autism. Additionally, as the Strings Program Director for the Foundation for the Advancement of Music & Education (FAME), Jordan developed a chamber music program at Hyattsville Middle School tailored to support the local Hispanic community. His prior teaching background also included coaching sectionals for the Columbia Youth Orchestra and leading masterclasses across regional institutions.

 

Scholarship and Artistic Vision

Jordan’s academic and performance pursuits focus heavily on amplifying underrepresented voices in classical music. His scholarly work centers on researching, performing, and recording the compositions of African American and Latino masters—such as Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Joseph White, Florence Price, and Jessie Montgomery. By building a rigorous academic foundation at UTSA, he aims to expand the traditional classical canon, establish a lasting body of research, and eventually pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.).

 

Artistic Resourcefulness and Extracurricular Pursuits

 

Driven by deep technical curiosity, Jordan spent years collaborating with luthier Eddie Matus to meticulously deconstruct and modify his violin to replicate the unique tonal qualities of Guarneri instruments. Outside of his musical and academic life, Jordan is an avid linguist with an active multi-year Duolingo streak spanning Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Arabic. Through his daily stream-of-consciousness journaling practice, he channels his creativity into writing a science fiction novel exploring technology and human connection, while diving with great enthusiasm into this exciting new chapter of graduate study in San Antonio.
