Teaching & Philosophy
Jordan's Private Studio
My studio is open and accepting new students at this time. Keep reading to find out what you can expect from my lessons and key observations for violin instruction at every level.
I have a kinesthetic approach to teaching which means I incorporate motion and rhythm into my lessons. My students can expect to have an experiential experience with violin. I set standards for progress while maintaining an atmosphere for learning and growth. While I am classically-trained, I am open to exploring other genres should students express a desire to do so.
Lessons will typically involve:
-
Reviewing material from the previous lesson
-
Scales and etudes
-
Left-hand/right-hand technique + coordination
-
Basic introduction to Music History, Music Theory, and Performance Practice
Students are expected to:
-
Be on time
-
Prepare for each lesson by practicing, listening, and asking questions
-
Will strive for musical mastery of technique, expression, and exploring multiple interpretations
-
Have a positive attitude, be ready to learn, and experiment
Observations to keep in mind:
-
Students who are willing to try and experiment are often the most successful
-
Growth is slow and steady, often accompanied by "Ah-ha!" moments
-
Bow hold and instrument setup is a process; it will take time to "master"
-
Technique can be a means of personal expression
For Parents:
Your child needs your help! Most learning occurs outside of the lesson; at home or in school. Encourage them to practice everyday; they will know what they need to practice
-
Set aside a specific place + time to practice in the home
-
Make practice time a scheduled priority, like going to school
-
Ask them questions! Learn from them and encourage them to learn from others
-
Explore local concerts and arts programs, as well as performance opportunities
